The 89th Annual Torrey Memorial hike will be held Sunday, October 29. Join us as we honor Trail Conference co-founder Raymond H. Torrey and Meyer Kukle.
Raymond H. Torrey was an early 20th-century New York outdoor writer, fierce advocate for open space and parks, a founder of the Trail Conference, and a co-author of the first edition of the New York Walk Book, Raymond H. Torrey. A memorial to Torrey, who helped plan and create many of the most popular trails in the park, is engraved at the summit of Long Mountain. Torrey died in 1938.
Meyer Kukle was a long-time advocate for trails and conservation through his work with the Trail Conference as a former co-director and the Palisades Parks Commission. Meyer Kukle died in 2006.
We will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Long Mountain parking lot on Route 6 in Harriman State Park. Explore the full hike description.
Event coordinator Peter Kukle will say a few words on the early days of Raymond Torrey, Meyer Kukle and the Trail Conference on the top of Long Mountain during a brief ceremony at noon.
The event will be held rain or shine. Dogs on leash welcome.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch and water.
